Manu Matsigenka - 4 Days, 3 Nights - $480

An Authentic Manu Experience - The natural and cultural wonders of Manu National Park are best experienced with the help of the people who have lived in and around the rainforests and rivers of the park for hundreds (if not thousands) of years. These people are the Matsigenka and they are ready to share their intimate knowledge of the forest and culture with folks who take this itinerary. Sign up for the 4 day/3 night Manu Matsigenka experience and you will see the rainforests, wildlife, and culture of Manu through the eyes of the Matsigenka people.

Day 1 - Travel from Cusco to Pankotsi Lodge

This first day of the tour begins with an early start from the ancient Incan capital of Cuzco. We leave the cobbled streets of Cuzco at five in the morning because we have a long, very scenic drive that takes us from the Andean altiplano all the way down through the lush cloud forests and foothill rainforests of the Manu Park buffer zone. On the way, we will be treated to beautiful, forested hills and landscapes before reaching the Amazonian lowlands at Atalaya around noon. After lunch, we board a boat that will take us down a jungle river to Pankotsi Lodge (Pankotsi means house in Matsigenka), a Matsigenka community lodge situated right next to Manu National Park on the Alto Madre de Dios River. During the boat ride, we may see macaws and parrots in flight, and other Amazonian birds on the edge of the river. We arrive at the lodge at 5 PM and will celebrate the end of a memorable travel day with dinner at 7pm.

Day 2 - Visit the native community

After breakfast at 7, we will spend our first morning in the Peruvian Amazon learning more about the Matsigenka culture and participating in cultural activities. This could include sessions where we learn how to make Matsigenka bows and arrows, the woven shawl worn (cushma) by Matsigenka men and women, and other aspects of Matsigenka culture. In the afternoon, we will walk trails near the lodge to several massive, ancient rainforest trees. Spotting wildlife in the jungle is always a challenge but we may get lucky and see monkeys and jungle birds, and will have a first hand look at some of the most biodiverse rainforests on Earth. After dinner, we will head back into the rainforest to look for bizarre jungle insects, frogs, and other nocturnal wildlife. Optional sleep over at a mammal clay lick to look for jungle night life. Mosquito nets included.

Day 3 - Explore and learn about the forest from the Matsigenka.

Jungle animals tend to be more active at night and in the early morning. With this in mind, we will go for a jungle hike at 5 AM to have a chance at seeing more animals and birds that live in the rainforests of Manu. We will come back to the lodge for breakfast at 8 AM and will do another cultural activity at 9:30. In the afternoon, participants can choose between a game of volleyball with local Matsigenka people, going for another hike in the rainforest, or other nature-oriented activity. We will finish our last day off at Shipetiari with a farewell dinner and time with the local community around a campfire.

Day 4 - Pankotsi back to Cusco

This last day of the tour will be dedicated to travel from the lodge back up to the high Andean city of Cuzco. We will start with an early 4 AM breakfast, travel upriver by boat from Shipetiari to Atalaya, and after lunch at Villa Carmen, we continue on up the Manu road to arrive in Cuzco by 8 PM.
